Off-Grid
Project Summary
Off-Grid is a master’s thesis project for the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management that focuses on the development and expansion of photovoltaic (PV) microgrids in off-grid communities. With help from First Solar, this project uses life cycle methodology to assess the environmental tradeoffs of three different PV microgrid systems compared to traditional sources of electrification. The goal of this project is to assist the PV Industry in developing commercial scale off-grid applications. Providing these “off-grid” communities with access to electricity enables quality of life improvements including sanitation, refrigeration, local industry development, improved educational opportunities, and water treatment.
